CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — The top team of the Chagrin Falls High School Financial Literacy Course recently finished seventh out of 64 local teams in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge.

High school students from Northeast Ohio converged on the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland Dec. 2 to simulate the high-energy Wall Street trading floor.

Teams of three to four students were issued $1 million in “mock stock,” with the goal of accumulating the most wealth through selling and buying fictional shares every 60 seconds.

Chagrin Falls High School financial literacy teacher John Bakalar prepared his teams by having them meet with Chagrin Falls resident Mindy Qua, a financial consultant with Stratos Wealth. Qua prepared the classes with three lessons concerning the stock market and investing strategies.

Just before the competition’s trading session, the Junior Achievement coordinator runs a simulated contest to assist the young traders. Once the stock market challenge starts, students — within a minute — need to analyze new events regarding their stock to make their next trade.

For the third straight year, the Polaris Career Center in Middleburg Heights won the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge and the $500 grand prize.
